On Third-Party Perspective and Controls Improvements

I enjoy being a consultant and helping clients identify and improve inefficient processes. Sometimes companies experience rapid growth or hardships, which make it difficult to find time to evaluate current processes – even if they’re problematic or create unnecessary headaches and delays. Bringing in an outside consultant allows internal teams to continue day-to-day duties, while the consultant develops a plan to increase efficiency through evaluation of the inputs and required outputs of the organization.

For example, one of my recent clients generated a full set of financials manually in Excel via trial balance export from its ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365. The company had not evaluated the ERP’s built-in reporting capabilities because the process wasn’t seen as broken.

I used the Microsoft Dynamics Report Builder tool to map and replicate the client’s existing financials in the ERP, making all reports on demand. I also enhanced the existing reporting package by developing ratio analysis reports. The client reduced its month-end close timeline and streamlined its financial reporting process by being willing to engage a consultant to develop reports in its ERP.
