On Knowledge Sharing as a Consultant

At my most recent engagement, I worked across multiple divisions/departments at all levels of the organization. I really enjoy seeing a business from as many aspects as possible, interacting with as many people as possible and improving my skill set by learning from those with more experience. But often, the ability to share your own knowledge, experiences and “work hacks” provides the greatest sense of accomplishment.

In this particular instance, a staff member of the accounting team was new to the company and had started just prior to my arrival. They were experiencing that drinking-from-a-firehose shock of being new – a lot of information and new terminology being thrown at them with little time to digest. As getting up to speed quickly is my normal, I was able to share some of my organizing and note-taking hacks to help dissolve some of the clutter.

It was a great feeling helping the staff member have an “aha moment.” Their whole demeanor changed, and they were able to focus on the more important aspects of their role and become a contributing member of the team faster.
